Mission:
The Kettering Health Orthopedic Surgery Residency Program's mission is to produce competent, compassionate, well-rounded, practice-ready Orthopedic Surgeons. We train our residents with an emphasis on providing high-quality care. In doing so, the program fosters the continuation of quality care of patients throughout the Kettering Health, Dayton, as well as the greater Miami Valley region. Orthopedic Associates of Southwest Ohio trained surgeons instruct the residents with the goal of achieving proficiency and excellence in surgical and therapeutic services, education, and research. Over the course of their training, each resident develops competency and efficiency in the operating room and the use of technical surgical equipment under the supervision of qualified surgeon faculty and staff. The program continues to strive to be a leader amongst Orthopedic Surgery residency programs in our region by continuously developing an up-to-date curriculum, providing outstanding academic mentorship, and fostering Quality Improvement strategies.
The Orthopedic Surgery residency is a 5-year, option 1 program. It includes training in adult, pediatric and general orthopedics, hand surgery, sports medicine, spine, amputations, total joint arthroplasty, trauma, and basic sciences. All residents and available faculty attend teaching conferences held daily. Additional academic sessions are held every Tuesday afternoon and a journal club meets monthly. All osteopathic orthopedic residents in the state of Ohio meet once a month for an education day.
We train physicians to be clinically competent Orthopedic surgeons, compassionate caregivers, and collaborative leaders in the health care system, and who will improve the professional discipline and their practice through life long learning and service to others.
The orthopedic surgery residents have their own bio skills lab and cadaver lab available in the Wetherell Skills lab at our Washington Township campus. Out rotations are offered at Main Campus, Dayton Children's Medical Center, Grant Medical Center (OhioHealth), Orthopedic Associates of Southwest Ohio, Beacon Orthopedics, and St. Vincent Hospitals and Health Care Center (Indianapolis). Out time for elective rotations are also available. Each resident has the opportunity for research and are given the opportunity to attend an educational conference.
