Mission & Aims

Mission Statement:
We are committed to training R1 Transitional Year residents who need a broad-based clinical year, before entering a specific specialty training program such as anesthesiology, dermatology, neurology, ophthalmology, physical medicine and rehabilitation, radiology, or radiation oncology. Other possible TY residents in the KHN/KMC TY residency may include medical school graduates who are interested in a career in primary care, but have not yet made a decision whether to pursue Internal Medicine or Family Practice as a specialty, medical school graduates who need a year of broad-based clinical training prior to serving in the Public Health Service, in the military as a general medical officer (GMO), or as a primary flight/undersea medicine physician, or medical school graduates who need at least one year of a broad-based clinical education prior to going on to administrative medicine or research. KHN/KMC administration supports the TY residency program because some graduates remain in the Southwest Ohio area, including practicing at Kettering Health Network.

Program Aims:
The TY program at KHN/KMC provides a broad-base of clinical experience in primary care which provides a strong foundation of medical knowledge that they take with them to their subsequent training program, or assist the individual in choosing a primary care specialty if necessary. In addition, the KHN/KMC TY residency emphasizes the overall ability to develop a strong skill in medical decision making, which is a key outcome for the KMC TY residents.. The TY resident's training includes the study and practice of patient-centered care from adolescence to old age, during health and all stages of illnesses. In harmony with our mission statement, we have placed emphasis on clinical competency and its assessment which has evolved from public interest in the safety, efficacy and accountability of healthcare. As such we emphasize scientific knowledge, the scientific method of problem solving, evidence-based decision-making, a commitment to lifelong learning, and an attitude of caring derived from humanistic and professional values.
