Welcome to the web site for the Transitional Year Residency at Kettering Medical Center in Dayton, Ohio! I certainly hope that the information on our web site will be interesting to you, and answer many questions you might have about our outstanding program.

Kettering Medical Center has a rich tradition and a great track-record in training Transitional Year residents. Our TY residents have gone on to exciting and productive jobs throughout the nation, and even the world. At KMC we have chosen to train TY residents because there is a great need for well-rounded physicians in every specialty. By developing a Transitional Year Residency that is built on a foundation of Internal Medicine, our residents graduate from KMC with a thorough understanding of the basic building blocks of clinical practice. They also understand how a major medical center, which is an intricate and complicated system, operates in the real world.

The Transitional Year Residency program at KMC has been developed for:

Medical school graduates who need a broad-based clinical year, before entering a specific specialty training program such as anesthesiology, dermatology, neurology, ophthalmology, physical medicine and rehabilitation, radiology, or radiation oncology.
Medical school graduates who are interested in a career in primary care, but have not yet made a decision whether to pursue Internal Medicine or Family Practice as a specialty. The TY program at KMC can provide a broad base of clinical experience in primary care, thus assisting the individual in choosing a primary care specialty.
Medical school graduates who need a year of broad-based clinical training prior to serving in the Public Health Service, in the military as a general medical officer (GMO), or as a primary flight/undersea medicine physician.
Medical school graduates who need at least one year of a broad-based clinical education prior to going on to administrative medicine or research.

Furthermore, since the TY Residency includes up to four to five 4-week blocks of electives, this allows us to design the year especially for you, to meet your own personal goals and aspirations. The Transitional Year Residency is directly affiliated with the Internal Medicine Residency at KMC. Because the TY program is part of both KMC and Wright State University, this provides many opportunities for your education that you could not experience in just one hospital setting.

As a TY resident at KMC, there will be many opportunities and challenges during your year in SW Ohio. These will provide you with the chance to grow as a physician and a person.
