Hand Surgery

The Hand Surgery fellowship is a 1 year subspecialty program.

The Kettering Health Hand Surgery Fellowship is a one-year, fully-accredited ACGME program, dedicated to providing high-quality orthopedic training under the direction of H. Brent Bamberger, D.O., Program Director, and faculty (Tim Harman, D.O., Andrew Malarkey, D.O., David Martineau, M.D., Adam Dann, D.O., Paul Gleason, M.D. and Natalie Bauer M.D.). The primary campus is located at Washington Township in Dayton, OH. Satellite and affiliated training facilities include other local, accredited training sites, including Dayton Children's Hospital.

The purposes of the Kettering Health Hand Surgery Fellowship are to:

1. Provide continuity of didactic and clinical experiences, which will enable the fellow to become proficient in the examination, diagnosis, and treatment of orthopedic hand patients, while integrating osteopathic principles and practices as they relate to the specialty.
2. Provide the fellow with properly organized, progressive responsibility in the care of patients. This includes management of their own patients at a weekly fellow's clinic, supervised by attending staff.
3. Provide the fellow with the necessary education and information to successfully complete the AOBOS or ABOS CAQ certification examination.
4. Provide patients with safe, competent, and comprehensive care.
5. A developing congenital and pediatric hand clinic under the direction of David Martineau, MD
6. Extensive elbow trauma and reconstruction
7. A vibrant shoulder reconstruction experience The Hand Fellowship is twelve (12) consecutive months in duration.

The institution is able to provide sufficient patient load with diverse pathology to properly train two orthopedic hand fellows, including a balance of both hospitalized and ambulatory patients, to allow for the fellow's progressive management of patients. All orthopedic surgery hand fellows may have opportunities, by agreement with the Program Director, to maintain their skills in general orthopedic surgery, as long as it does not interfere with the core expectation to develop in their chosen hand subspecialty. Applicants must be a general, plastic or orthopedic surgery resident from an ACGME accredited residency program. Other Application materials needed are: DME Letter, NBOME Board Scores, Personal Statement, three letters of recommendation (one letter of recommendation should be from Hand Surgeon). The didactic and clinical curriculum is competency-based according to the ACGME General Competencies. Didactic sessions include lectures, literature review, board review, journal club, daily and weekly conferences, and participation in morning report and grand rounds. Additional didactic activities are available at affiliated rotation sites. Successful completion of the program will lead to eligibility to sit for the CAQ exam via the AOBOS.

The KH Hand Surgery Fellowship participates in the NRMP "TheMatch".
