Mission:
The goal of the Kettering Health Otolaryngology Surgery program is to help our residents obtain the knowledge, skills, and attitudes necessary to become competent otolaryngologists, head and neck, and facial plastic surgeons. These knowledge, skills and attitudes will prepare the residents for community-based practice in the twenty-first century. The program uses the ACGME program requirements in the preparation of educational outcomes for its graduates.

The KHN Otolaryngology Surgery program is a 5-year program which takes 1 resident per year into the program.

The goals of the Kettering Health otolaryngology surgery program is to help our residents obtain the knowledge, skills, and attitudes necessary to become competent otolaryngologists. The needs of the community can be quite diverse both in terms of the patient population it serves and in terms of healthcare delivery systems. Our program exposes the residents to numerous healthcare systems in an extremely diverse patient population. In keeping with the Kettering health network philosophy, we have a responsibility to promote positive change within the community we serve. Ultimately this exposure, coupled with the Kettering Health Network philosophy, will prepare the residents for community-based practice in the 21st-century.

Block Diagram

The residency incorporates a comprehensive education in both the inpatient and outpatient settings to help prepare for general practice after training. Inpatient time is spent between two large hospital systems including the Kettering Health Network and Premier Health Network. Outpatient time is spent in multiple clinical offices in the Dayton area.

Residents are required to attend weekly didactic sessions and educational opportunities including temporal bone lab, tumor board, journal club, case conferences, and morbidity and mortality conferences.

With close supervision, residents are responsible for managing all types of otolaryngology cases in the emergency room setting, inpatient consults, outpatient clinics, and the operating room. A buddy call system is used to help transition the intern into full call responsibility starting second year. Autonomy in all patient care settings and the operating room will increase in a graduated fashion and will be directly supervised by the program director and other faculty.

During your time in residency here, you will be encouraged and, at times, required to attend various conferences around the country. Some of these conferences and courses include a cadaveric sinus course, a temporal bone course, the AOCMF facial trauma course, the AAOA basic allergy course, AOCOO-HNS annual meeting and the AAO-HNS annual meeting.

In addition to the time spent with pediatric ENT specialists at Dayton Children's Hospital during the first two training years, the resident will receive further advanced pediatric training at Cincinnati Children's Hospital during the PGY-3 year. There is also a two month rotation in Rhinology and Skull Base Surgery at Good Samaritan Hospital in Cincinnati.

The residents also have access to several sim labs. In addition to our dedicated monthly temporal bone lab, there also is unique sim lab training with endoscopic ear surgery. A state of the art cadaveric dissection lab is also available to all surgical residents.

Our residents have successfully attained fellowships in a wide variety of sub-specialties that includes neuro-otology, rhinology and skull base surgery, laryngology/professional voice, pediatric otolaryngology, head and neck surgical oncology, cosmetic surgery, plastic and reconstructive surgery.

Our Alumni have attained faculty/academic positions at leading otolaryngology institutions which include University of Pittsburgh, USC, UCLA, New Mexico VA, and Wake Forest. Additionally, our graduates are also rooted in independent private practices throughout the country. Regardless of affiliation, our graduates have taken a commitment to become lifelong educators. Two of our graduates are currently serving as program directors in ACGME programs.

The ENT program is looking for applicants who are team players and have a strong work ethic. We strongly recommend that you take time to visit our program for a two-week rotation during the audition season.
