Hematology Oncology Fellowship
Clinical Training & Education
Our fellows spend their clinical time between inpatient and outpatient services at Kettering Health Dayton (former Grandview Medical Center) and Kettering Health Main Campus. Some of the rotations are done outside, University of Cincinnati Blood Cancer and Cellular Therapy at Blood Cancer Healing Center for stem cell transplant, and VITAS hospice for hospice and palliative care.
Each fellow will have a designated, full day Continuity Fellow Clinic (Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursday). The fellows Continuity Clinic is located on the Medical Oncology floor at the Kettering Main Campus Cancer Center. This experience allows the fellows to evaluate, treat and monitor a heterogeneous group of patients for the duration of their training. The fellows take ownership of these patients which gives them the opportunity to manage their disease through several lines of treatment, see their outcomes and develop trust and long relationships with patients and their families. The fellow Continuity Clinic is essential in the education and training of our Hematology-Oncology Fellows.
Current inpatient experience includes 4-week rotation blocks through a hematology-oncology consult service at Kettering Health Dayton and Kettering Health Main Campus. Each fellow will be on call 2 out of the 4 weeks. They will be covering calls from the floor and from emergency rooms connected to the main campus. In this rotation, the fellow will evaluate patients that present to the hospital with new hematologic and oncologic diseases, many of those patients will follow-up with the fellow in the continuity clinic. During the inpatient blocks, the fellow will also evaluate and treat complications of cancer treatments that get hospitalized, as well as patients in the end-stage of her journey who need a thorough discussion regarding goals of care.
In addition to the continuity clinic, fellows will also have an outpatient oncology rotation, in that rotation, they will work alongside faculty members seeing educational cases in a longitudinal manner. Fellows will perform all outpatient procedures, including bone marrow biopsies and intrathecal chemotherapy during this block. This clinic rotation is a rotation where fellows gain experience in the core areas of Hematology-Oncology.
The fellows have dedicated core curriculum lectures every Monday and Wednesday. These conferences are guided by the Chief Fellows who will participate in faculty and sometimes guest speaker lectures.
Fellows are given protected time for research purposes every year, their research will be presented at our local KHN Research symposium or at any of the annual cancer conferences like ASCO, ASH or ESMO.
