The Kettering Health (KH) General Surgery Residency Program seeks to produce competent, compassionate, and current osteopathic surgeons through dedication to self-directed learning, progressive training in advanced surgical skills, and a lifelong commitment to advancement of surgical knowledge. We want to produce surgeons who will improve the lives of patients and colleagues in the communities they serve. The General Surgery's staff and physicians are multi-subspecialty trained. The physicians instruct the residents with the goal of achieving proficiency and excellence in services, education, and research. Over the course of their training, each resident develops competency and efficiency in the handling and use of technical equipment, surgical equipment as well as surgical lab skills under the supervision of qualified faculty and staff.

2020-2021 Academic Year: 2 (PGY-1), 2 (PGY-2), 2 (PGY-3), 3 (PGY-4), 2 (PGY-5)
2021-2022 Academic Year: 2 (PGY-1), 2 (PGY-2), 2 (PGY-3), 2 (PGY-4), 3 (PGY-5)

The Kettering Health General Surgery Residency Program is a 5-year program which takes 2 residents per year into the program. It is the goal of this program to meet the ever changing needs of residency training in General Surgery to meet the demands of training the modern surgeon. We provide progressive, continuous training to satisfy all requirements necessary for eventual certification in General Surgery by the American Osteopathic Association through the American Osteopathic Board of Surgery with an option to meet requirements in becoming board certified through the American Board of Surgery.

The Department of General Surgery at Kettering Health Dayton assumes the obligation to supervise training of General Surgery Residents.

Residents are exposed to basic sciences as related to surgical practice and have required rotations in various specialty areas relating to the practice of surgery. There is special emphasis on developing technical skills, diagnostic competency, sound medical and surgical judgment, preoperative and postoperative care, as well as progressive development and responsibility in the seven competencies: professionalism, Osteopathic principles and practices, medical knowledge, communication and interpersonal skills, practices-based learning, systems-based practice, and patient care. Emphasis is placed on high ethical and moral standards.

  1. Produce general surgeons who are highly qualified, competent, compassionate, well-rounded, and ready for a career in community-based surgery.

  2. Expand our residency to support the local demand for general surgeons as KH opens new locations to care for an increasing patient population.

  3. Prepare residents to be competitive applicants for fellowships and have the opportunity to pursue a subspecialty interest of their choice.

  4. Train physicians who are involved in Quality Improvement and aware of how to conduct research in a community-based setting.

  5. Continue to train and retain the top-notch graduates of the General Surgery Residency Program to meet the Kettering Health's overall mission of improving the quality of care throughout the Dayton area and the state of Ohio.
General Surgery Residents train at six locations:
- Kettering Health Dayton
- Kettering Health Main Campus
- Grant Medical Center (OhioHealth) - Columbus, Ohio
- Dayton Children's Hospital
- Miami Valley Hospital
- Ohio State University Hospital
All residents should present a poster at a local, state, regional or national conference during their residency.

Chief residents should present at the American College of Osteopathic Surgeons (ACOS).

Residents utilize the Skills/Simulation Labs every week and have Suture Labs in the Russ Wetherell Innovations Center in the Yankee Medical Building.

The KH General Surgery program will select from among eligible applicants on the basis of their preparedness, ability, aptitude, academic credentials, communication skills, and personal qualities such as motivation and integrity. The program strives to recruit, select, and retain a diverse group of residents. We do this first and foremost by marketing our program to highly qualified DO and MD candidates from various backgrounds and medical schools. All candidates must do a Sub-Internship Rotation at our Institution and pass the COMLEX and/or USMLE on the first attempt. Our interview selection committee aims to set aside conscious and unconscious bias during the interview and ranking process in an effort to select candidates that would best benefit from the educational experience that our program has to offer.

All applications must be received through ERAS.
