 Residency Program

Farm Safety Day 2023

The Soin Family Medicine Residency program established a Rural Medicine Pathway in 2021. Based in nearby Jamestown, Ohio, this pathway is for residents who are interested in providing health care to the underserved and marginalized patient population in rural settings. We have grown to our full complement of six residents with the 2023 match. Our residents are trained to assess the needs of their community, take a leadership role in developing medical outreach, and provide best practice medical care within a community clinic framework. Focus will be on issues specific to rural patient population - lack of access to preventative and subspecialty care, unmet psychiatric and addiction treatment resources, & health literacy.

Residents in our Rural Pathway see patients in the newly remodeled Jamestown Health Center, a qualified rural health clinic, alongside physicians who have been in the community for a combined total of over 75 years. Required core rotations are located at Indu and Raj Soin Medical Center and in community offices in the Beavercreek, Xenia, and surrounding areas. Pediatric Emergency medicine rotations take place at Dayton Children's Hospital. All residents in Soin Medical Education participate together in didactics on Friday afternoons at the Soin Family Practice Center.

Some of the distinctive experiences we offer our Rural Pathway residents include:

  • Completion of point-of-care ultrasound rotation in PGY-1 year and routine bedside POCUS integration in continuity clinic, which boasts access to a large Philips ultrasound unit and also two handheld probes
  • Additional Emergency Medicine shifts at Greene Memorial Hospital in Xenia during PGY-1 & PGY-3 rotations
  • Outpatient Cardiology clinic at Greene Memorial Hospital during PGY-1 rotation
  • Endocrinology rotation during PGY-2 year including experiences with a multidisciplinary diabetes care team
  • 2-week Podiatry rotation in Xenia during PGY-3 year
  • Behavioral Health rotation during PGY-3 year with a dual-boarded Pediatric & Adult Psychiatrist at Community Health & Wellness Partners of Logan County, a rural FQHC site
  • Residents participate in patient home visits during 2nd and 3rd years

All applications and applicant information should be sent through ERAS - select the Rural Pathway - Jamestown. Applications will not be accepted via email. NRMP PROGRAM CODE: 1576120C2
