Procedural Training

The Soin Family Medicine residency provides its residents with a wide variety of procedural training.

The newest skill being taught is vasectomies. Currently, 3 faculty members are performing this procedure within our clinic. Interested residents can begin training in their R2 year. No other civilian residency program in the region offers this unique opportunity! Interested residents will be able to provide this low-risk outpatient procedure to their own patients upon graduation, thus reducing wait times, improving patient and staff satisfaction, and reducing rates of unintended pregnancy.

  • Gynecological procedures include colposcopy, endometrial biopsies, Nexplanon insertion/removal, and IUD placement/removal.
  • Musculoskeletal procedures include knee, greater trochanter, shoulder, elbow, wrist, and hand injections as well as toenail removals.
  • Dermatological procedures include skin biopsies, laceration repair, cyst and lipoma removals, incision and drainage, skin tag removals, and cryotherapy.

Aside from procedures dispersed within routine clinics, our residents rotate through dedicated procedure clinics throughout their R2 and R3 year,s where they work 1:1 with core faculty.

Numerous training models are available to aid with simulated hand, wrist, and shoulder injections. Models also are available to assist with Nexplanon and IUD placement/removal, endometrial biopsies, toenail removals, vasectomies and suturing.

Residents can expect to receive adequate exposure and training to graduate with competency to independently perform all typical family medicine outpatient procedures.
